What (who) is Mach$543565$ - definition

PRESSURE WAVE
Mach angle; Mach line; Mach cone; Mach stem; Mach front
  • A sonic boom produced by an aircraft moving at M=2.92, calculated from the cone angle of 20 degrees. Observers hear nothing until the shock wave, on the edges of the cone, crosses their location.

Mach number
  • The speed of sound (blue) depends only on the temperature variation at altitude (red) and can be calculated from it since isolated density and pressure effects on the speed of sound cancel each other. The speed of sound increases with height in two regions of the stratosphere and thermosphere, due to heating effects in these regions.

RATIO OF SPEED OF OBJECT MOVING THROUGH FLUID AND SPEED OF SOUND
Mach (speed); Mach Number; Mach speed; Mach 5 (speed)
Mach number (M or Ma) (; ) is a dimensionless quantity in fluid dynamics representing the ratio of flow velocity past a boundary to the local speed of sound.
Shock diamond
  • Shock diamonds beneath [[Masten Space Systems]] Xoie rocket during the [[Lunar Lander Challenge]] competition-winning landing.
  • An [[F-22 Raptor]] with shock diamonds behind it
  • Shock diamonds behind a [[Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird]].
  • Aerojet Rocketdyne [[RS-25]] engine test at NASA's Stennis Space Center
  • F-16]] taking off with afterburner
WAVE PATTERN IN SUPERSONIC EXHAUST
Shock diamonds; Mach diamond; Exhaust diamond; Mach disk; Mach Disks; Mach diamonds; Thrust diamond
Shock diamonds (also known as Mach diamonds or thrust diamonds) are a formation of standing wave patterns that appear in the supersonic exhaust plume of an aerospace propulsion system, such as a supersonic jet engine, rocket, ramjet, or scramjet, when it is operated in an atmosphere. The "diamonds" are actually a complex flow field made visible by abrupt changes in local density and pressure as the exhaust passes through a series of standing shock waves and expansion fans.
Abner Jenkins
FICTIONAL CHARACTER IN MARVEL COMICS
MACH-1 (comics); Beetle (Abe Jenkins); MACH-IV (comics); Abe Jenkins; MACH-4 (Marvel Comics); MACH-IV (Marvel Comics); Abner Ronald Jenkins
Abner Ronald Jenkins, also known as the Beetle, MACH-1, MACH-2, MACH-3, MACH-IV, MACH-V, MACH-VII and MACH-X, is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by writer Stan Lee and artist Carl Burgos, he debuted in Strange Tales #123 (August 1964) as the original Beetle, a supervillain wearing an armor plated, mechanical suit he had designed himself after growing frustrated with his ordinary job as an aircraft mechanic and deciding to turn to crime.

Mach wave

In fluid dynamics, a Mach wave is a pressure wave traveling with the speed of sound caused by a slight change of pressure added to a compressible flow. These weak waves can combine in supersonic flow to become a shock wave if sufficient Mach waves are present at any location. Such a shock wave is called a Mach stem or Mach front. Thus, it is possible to have shockless compression or expansion in a supersonic flow by having the production of Mach waves sufficiently spaced (cf. isentropic compression in supersonic flows). A Mach wave is the weak limit of an oblique shock wave where time averages of flow quantities don't change (a normal shock is the other limit). If the size of the object moving at the speed of sound is near 0, then this domain of influence of the wave is called a Mach cone.
